For some reason, I think Ed probably really likes (or would really like) Govt. Mule:

Warren Haynes is the best guitar player EVER.  I don't like a lot of Govt Mule's stuff, and much prefer him with the Allman Brothers Band, but that's some sick geetar playing.

They had a song on the radio a few years back that I kind of liked.  I've only ever heard that one song from Government Mule but they are a band I could probably come to like a lot.

Although I wasn't much of a fan in the day, I have grown to appreciate the Allman Brothers more over the years, this is one of my all time favorite happy time love songs.

I like Phish.  There, I admitted it.

Anyway, I know lots of people get annoyed with Phish.  "Why are their songs 20 minutes long?"  "What the heck are these lyrics about?!?"  "You have to be on drugs to enjoy this music, right?"

But the heck with all that.  Transcendent nerd rock:

The opening of that is just great improvisational playing, and then around the five minute mark, Trey, the lead guitar player, goes nuts.

Jams like that are why people used to obsess about Phish, and follow them around the damn country.

And of course, those are all just recordings made by people out in the audience.

I think Phish is probably one of those bands you have to see live to appreciate.
