Christmas 2008

We spent this Christmas at my sister’s house, where I had much quality time with my 3 year old niece, who recently has become a big fan of Cinderella. Throughout the course of my stay there I would be confronted by her as she told me “You’re the jealous step-sister and I’m Cinderella.”. Then I ‘d order her to clean the kitchen floor and wash the dishes while I prepared myself for the big ball. After a few minutes I would be told “I’m following you to the ball!”. Once there she’d start dancing and tell me she was dancing with the prince and I wasn’t. After a few minutes I’d say “It’s midnight!” and that would be the end, until a short while later I’d feel a tug on my shirt and was once again given the role of jealous step-sister….
On Christmas, after setting up the little tent with tunnel that she got I sort of half crawled inside of it and she asked me what I was doing. “I’m a bear and I’m hibernating, wake me up when spring is here.” A few minutes later she crawled in through the tunnel and asked “Do you have room for a princess in here?” I replied with “Yes, so long as you don’t snore.” Then we’d pretend to sleep for a few mintues until she sat up and said “It’s spring! Time to wake up!” and we’d crawl out of the tent.
Apparently she liked that game too because when I wasn’t told I was the jealous step-sister I was told “Uncle Dirk, let’s hibernate!” and we’d go through the exact same ritual. Odd how much she liked doing that.
For Christmas I got a couple of books I’ve never heard of that the girlfriend said Junot Diaz had mentioned in an interview she watched with him so she figured I would like them. I’m about 80 pages into the first one and it’s pretty good so far.
I also got a NuForce Icon, which I managed to hook up without too many issues. I can’t get the USB DAC thing working on Ubuntu yet, but I’ve had a bunch of problems with audio on Ubuntu so that isn’t too surprising. I connected it to my computer using the RCA jacks and it’s working pretty good that way. A little more volume might be nice, but all in all I’m pretty happy with it. It is a lot smaller than I though it would be, but that’s not a bad thing.
